This Semester

This semseter has been very interesting to say the least. At first it was hard to get adjusted to the grammar of a new language. I felt as if i was pulling my own teeth trying to get the sounds out. lol. It has been a lot of work; at the beginning I had trouble getting the stuff to stick to my memory but i kept at it and I think that I started to improve as the semester went on. Learning Japanese this semester was difficult, but I did manage to have some fun along the way. I met a new group of people, hopefully some of them I can consider to be friends. Also, I don't think much of my learning would have been possible unless I had such an understanding and attentive teacher. A good teacher is always a benefit (in a way fukai sensei gave me the encouragement to do better, I don't know if she was even conscious of it at the time, but it is true. thank you sensei.) I look foward to comming back next semester to continue the journey. Hopefully I will encounter some familiar faces, if not, it's always good to meet new people.

What Makes a Good Podcast

What makes a good podcast? Well, a good podcast for this project should include useful information about life at Columbia University or New York city in general. Perhaps a video podcast should include popular tourist destinations and if possible good places to eat. For entertainment, perhaps someone could show where the best movie theaters are, or the popular museums. As for the actors they should try to sound as natural as possible (at least act like they know what they are saying lol).

Pulling Teeth

Sometimes being in Japanese class, trying to remember what particle goes where and whether or not to use kore, sore, dare, or doko (and remember the spacial relationship between each).....is like getting your teeth pulled!!!!

What Makes a Good Blog

I think a good blog should: tell something about the student's personality (reflect hobbies and interests); give an honest self-evalutaion of one's own progress within the language; and one should make an effort to use the different types of kana or Romanji (in accordance with what they know about vocabulary and sentence structure).

Language Lab

I enjoyed the language lab session. I like the program that runs the exercises; it's very helpful to hear the distinction between the sounds.

Some Kendo Videos

Aside from soccer, I'm also a practitioner of Kendo, the art of Japanese fencing. Kendo translates as "Way of the Sword." It was Kendo that first made me interested in Japanese history and language. Enjoy!!

First 3 Weeks

So far the first three weeks of class have gone by so fast. I enjoy reading and writing hiragana. the only thing that is frustrating me at the moment is using the proper grammatical constructions in forming sentences. Does anyone else find sentence construction difficult?

Difficulties

It's difficult to lean a new language especially when it's not based on the Roman alphabet. Anyone agree, disagree, or indifferent?

Hello everyone. My name is Ken. I'm from Ireland, but I've been living in New York for the past few years. My main interest in this class is to learn how to speak and read Japanese. I am very interested in Japanese history. this interest probably stems from my training in Kendo. Kendo is the Japanese martial art of fencing. Aside from Kendo, I also like soccer and my favorite player is Zinedine Zidane.　Despite my interest in Japanese history and martial arts, I have never been to Japan.
